The novel is told in alternate chapters by Neaera H and William G, two middle-aged people who are feeling rather lost. I didn’t watch it in the end, but it did make me pick up the book a couple of years ago – and, of course, I couldn’t resist a lovely NYRB Classics edition. I first heard of Turtle Diary (1975) by Russell Hoban when looking for films made in the year I was born (the adaptation was made in 1985).

Here we report, for the first time, that the strain G. Though mercury (Hg) methylation by anaerobic microorganisms and demethylation by aerobic Hg-resistant bacteria have both been extensively studied, little attention has been given to MeHg degradation by anaerobic bacteria, particularly the iron-reducing bacterium Geobacter bemidjensis Bem. Two competing processes controlling the net production and bioaccumulation of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in natural ecosystems are microbial methylation and demethylation. Finally, we suggest future research directions to further elucidate the chemical and biochemical mechanisms of biotic and abiotic demethylation and their significance in controlling net MeHg production in natural ecosystems. We focus on mechanisms and processes of demethylation and highlight more » the uncertainties and known effects of environmental factors leading to MeHg degradation. In addition, photochemical and chemical demethylation processes are described, including the roles of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and free radicals as well as dark abiotic demethylation in the natural environment about which little is currently known. Very recent research has begun to elucidate a mechanism for the long-recognized mer-independent oxidative demethylation, likely involving some strains of anaerobic bacteria as well as aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria, i.e., methanotrophs. We describe detoxification by resistant microorganisms that employ the Hg resistance (mer) system to reductively break the carbon–mercury (C–Hg) bond producing methane (CH 4) and inorganic mercuric Hg(II), which is then reduced by the mercuric reductase to elemental Hg(0). Here we review the current knowledge on MeHg degradation and its potential pathways and mechanisms. However, the net methylmercury (MeHg) concentration that accumulates in the environment is equally determined by the rate of MeHg degradation, a complex process mediated by a variety of biotic and abiotic mechanisms, about which our knowledge is limited. This story was originally featured on Fortune. The public and environmental health consequences of mercury (Hg) methylation have drawn much attention and considerable research to Hg methylation processes and their dynamics in diverse environments and under a multitude of conditions. “Our heads are spinning over here-not entirely sure what happens next," one startup founder told Fortune in a private message after the bank failed. A craftsman who has the best tools isn?t necessarily a better craftsman but at least he can?t blame his tools. At $171 delivered to my door it?s not exactly inexpensive but either are the other tools I use. The price is probably what will keep people from buying it. Considering the keyboards companies dare ship with their computers today it?s not really hard to make something better. I?m hoping this keyboard lasts a really long time because I love using it everyday. A really nice touch with great positioning.Īll the media keys are clustered together for easy reach, not spread out along the top of other keyboards. These keys allow me to pause and play podcasts in Instacast and control the volume. For the same reasons I use an Aeron chair, spending money on a good keyboard is as important as any piece of furniture.Ī nice touch is the media keys on the far right of the keyboard. This is how a keyboard should be?no mushy keys. The key presses are smooth, no binding, just nice press with tactile response and a clean release. It?s not ergonomic and I wondered if it mattered. I use this keyboard for writing software as well as my daily writing, emails and Twitter. I?ve been using this keyboard for going on 3 months and could not be happier. I found them to be a bit pricey so I just stuck with what came stock. WASD also offers replacement key sets in various colors and custom key sets such as the Mac command key and others. Thankfully WASD has take care of this for us, they include a keycap puller in the box that allowed me to easily swap the keys I needed. The only problem, now the Alt key is in the wrong spot. This is easy with the CODE, just a DIP switch change. I want the command key where it belongs, next to the space bar. I hate having Mac support as a second-class citizen. Mac support was critical for me when searching out a new keyboard. There are a set of DIP switches on the underside, used to control various functions such as turning backlighting on and off, keyboard layout (QWERTY, Dvorak or Colemak) and Mac support. It?s useful when I have the lights off in my office and I?m working. It?s not a feature I required but after having it, I love it. The keyboard is backlit, which is really nice. These hard to find switches deliver a superior typing experience over cheap rubber dome keyboards ? without deafening your neighbors in the process. These switches are unique in the Cherry line because they combine solid actuation force with quiet, non-click activation, and a nice tactile bump on every keystroke. Ultra-rare Cherry MX Clear mechanical key switches are the heart of the CODE keyboard. ?Even though I have the clear switches, they aren?t silent: I?m using clear and picked these due to sound of the three the clear switches have the last ?click? sound but still offer the tactile feel. Cherry keys switches are used offered in green, clear and brown. The key options is what really drew me to this keyboard. I chose the 87-key version because it uses less space and I don?t need a numerical keypad. The keyboard is offered in 87 and 101-key options. The CODE website says it weighs 2.42 pounds, but I don?t know which version it refers to. It feels like the IBM PC keyboards of old. The keyboard is actually manufactured by? WASD Keyboards, a company known for great keyboards with very flexible configurations. I never thought of creating my own but since Jeff is a developer, then maybe his wants were similar to mine. I remembered a post by Jeff Atwood where he talked about his dissatisfaction with keyboards, the solution?create his own. I understand you can still find them from time-to-time on eBay. The feedback is fantastic from the IBM keyboard but those are a thing of the past.Īpple once made a keyboard very similar the one from IBM, but those are also a thing of the past. I knew when I was pressing a key, no doubt about it. You know the one, it was loud and had a very responsive feel. I used to love the original IBM PC keyboard. I was able to return the Matias but I have a pile of lackluster keyboards. I?ve tried many including:Įach seemed to work well at first but after a short time their weaknesses surfaced. ?It?s more like an addiction to the pursuit of my ultimate keyboard. It seems to upload incredibly slowly, no matter what you do. The software is a bandwidth hog, even when its upload speeds are dialed down. On top of these troubles, Google’s Music Manager uploading has not operated well since launch. Moreover, it should be possible to upload tracks from an Android phone or tablet. This is useful, but we hope Google adds an auto-download feature that automatically downloads tracks to a PC when it’s added to Google Music. The Manager does have one good feature: You can choose to download only the songs that were added since your last mass download. That means you’ll have to download thousands of items to get a single song. If you download an album, but have already downloaded one of the songs on that album twice, that song will be skipped and you will be prompted to use the Music Manager to get the song. Google has no ownership of it, yet I am only allowed to download it once. This album (above) was purchased and downloaded from AmazonMP3, and uploaded to Google Music. Google announced this limitation for music purchased through Google, but it seems to apply to all music, even the music that you own and have uploaded to Google Music. If your computer is acting up and you don’t finish a download, well, too bad you’ll have to use your last download to get your songs. If this wasn’t frustrating enough, to download music, you can only download all of it. Hundreds (maybe thousands) of tracks that were ripped from CDs, purchased on Amazon MP3, and given to me by friends are now all labeled as Google Music purchases for no good reason. I tried to download only my “purchased music,” thinking that there would be nothing in there except for the few free songs I’ve downloaded on Google Music, but to my surprise, Google Music believes that it now owns a hefty portion of my music library. While it definitely seems to work (it downloads tracks), Google’s new download feature is extremely limited in functionality and its ability to detect which songs are purchased is completely broken. A confused cloudĪfter hearing this news, I tried out the updated app on my Windows 7 machine this morning to mixed results. The announcement was made on the official Google+ page for Android and verified by a new help article on the Android Market Web site. When I click on it and chose options which used to open up the interface to chose which folders you wanted to upload and so forth, nothing happens. When I chose Google Music Manager from my applications, it pops up in my tray as running but nothing actually happens. Now I have ripped some of my old cds and want to upload that content to Google. It worked fine and all the music downloaded. When I downloaded the music manager the first time, I wanted to actually download all the music I purchased from Google onto my Ubuntu 12.04 Dell Latitude E6400 32-bit. I like to upload my music to my Google account and I use Google Music Manager to do this. |
